Doctor Who Magazine delivered to North America

We get asked this question a lot, so we thought it was worth writing a blog post about it.  The question:

“Can I buy Doctor Who Magazine in America/the USA?”

The answer is yes.  We provide a subscription service which allows you to choose a 3, 6 or 12 issue subscription, and have the issues delivered to you within 7 days of the magazine being available on the UK newsstand.

A little history on the magazine

Doctor Who Magazine, which has been formerly known as Doctor Who Weekly/ Doctor Who Monthly is actually the world’s longest running magazine based on a television series (it’s over 30 years old).  The television series itself is 50 years old this year!

The magazine was initially published by Marvel comics in the UK in mid October of 1979.  In September of 1980 the magazine switched over to a Monthly publication.  Over the next 5 years it underwent several name changes from Doctor Who – A Marvel Monthly to Doctor Who Magazine in December 1985.

Distribution outside the UK

The availability of the magazine outside the UK has been sporadic at best.  Where Doctor Who has been popular, the magazine could be found in specialist comic book and cult fantasy shops.  As a weekly title the magazine was not available in the USA at all, but when it moved to a monthly title in the 1980’s it was available in the US through Marvel distribution.  In the 1990s the magazine ownership transferred to Panini, and distribution in North America became less wide spread.  A few comic book shops carried the odd issue, but only occasional issues.

Where the magazine is available it is often a number of weeks after the magazine has been issued in the UK, and so there is quite a lag between the magazine content and the on screen episodes.

Unique Magazines saves the day

We offer a subscription service to Doctor Who Magazine which means we send you the issued as soon as they are on sale in the UK.  We package up the magazines, and post them directly to you.  We post the magazines via airmail, so they will be with you in the USA within 5-7 days at most.

This is very important, as Doctor Who is now produced by BBC America, meaning that the episodes are aired on the same date in both the US and the UK.  So it is important that you receive your issues quickly, so that the magazine content is still relevant to the on screen episodes.

How to Subscribe to Doctor Who Magazine in North America

To order your subscription to Doctor Who Magazine, simply go to the product page and select a 3, 6 or 12 month subscription.  The checkout process is then as simple as telling us where you want the magazines to be delivered (because you can of course order the magazines for yourself, or as a gift for someone else).  Complete your payment using your credit card, and that’s it.

When is the magazine on sale?

Doctor Who Magazine is on sale the first Thursday of each month.  This means that when you subscribe, we will post the magazine to you on the first Thursday of the month, and it will be with you within 7 days.  So expect to receive your copies by the second Thursday of each month.

Are the free gifts included?

Sometimes the magazine has a “cover mounted” gift, which is basically a free gift attached to the cover of the magazine. The good news is with our subscription service you will receive these free gifts if they are available on the magazine.

Can I subscribe in the UK, Europe or anywhere else in the world?

Yes you can.  We wrote this blog post as it is a question which comes up from our American customers regularly, but you can also subscribe to Doctor Who Magazine in Europe and the rest of the world.  Just go to the Doctor Who Magazine page on our website, select your country from the country list, and then choose a 3, 6 or 12 month subscription.
