Esquire Big Black Book UK Edition : A Review

Working at Unique Magazines, I have the privilege of viewing some of the most specialist magazines titles from around the world.

The most recent of these magazines is the new UK version of Esquire Big Black Book.  I have the job of reviewing this launch issue of this UK version of Big Black Book launched back in 2006 in the USA.

What is The Big Black Book?

Big Black Book is a luxury magazine, aimed at "high net worth men" and influencers.  It has attracted some of the biggest luxury brands in cars, watches, fragrances, skin care, spirits and cigars.

My first impression of the publication is that this doesn’t feel like a magazine.  There is a quality about this publication which is unlike anything I have come across before.  It's heavy matt black cover announces that this is “The Style manual for successful men”, whilst the simple red taped spine alludes to the luxury content to be found within.  Even the smell of the publication is rich.  So far this is a very tactile, immersive experience, and everything about it says quality.

A work of art and a collector’s item

I start to flick through the first few pages, and find that the quality of the cover and binding is continued with the luxurious thick stock on which the magazine is printed.  The stunning edge to edge photography blows me away, and I haven’t even made it to any editorial content.

I have already made up my mind that this magazine is a future collector item, and I am planning how I will store it to keep it fresh for years to come.  But I should really keep on reading and reviewing.

It is then that I get to the editors letter, which serves as a great introduction to the magazine.  I read that the magazine is intended to be both practical and entertaining and also “a pleasing object in it's own right”.  As I have spent the last 250 words of this review talking about the feel, smell and look of the magazine, I would say they have succeeded on this front.
